Misguided "Tribute" to 9/11Heroes

Posted by: Ben Uhl

The following is an email my best-friend and the "buck" half of CyBuck Blog, CPT Scott Smitson.  It is a good read.

Dear editorial staff of “The Daily Cougar-Online”,

I can not state how misguided and inappropriate showing Michael Moore’s propaganda manifesto “Fahrenheit 911” is as a way to “pay tribute” to those that died on that awful day 5 years ago. Miss Pham states that she is not attempting to be “political or anti-Bush” by showing the film, but anyone that has seen the film knows it to be both. If she wanted to show a film that was apolitical about that day, Paul Greengrass’ “United 93” or Oliver Stone’s “World Trade Center” would have been much more appropriate. What about a town hall discussion of the bipartisan 9/11 Commission findings? A multi-faith memorial service for all those, of all faiths, that perished that day? Or to be completely fair and balanced if you take Moore as “fact”, how about showing the video of Wall Street reporter Daniel Pearl or US contractor Daniel Berg being beheaded by Al Qaeda, you know, Moore’s propaganda compared against theirs? If the organizers of this event wanted to simply “remember 9/11” in an apolitical manner, there were several different courses of action that could have been explored, but tragically were not. Using an opinionated, non-scholarly, “think piece” from one of the most one-sided “entertainers” around today does not “pay tribute” to those that died; it tarnishes their memories by defining 9/11 as a catastrophe orchestrated in part by the commanding heights of political power, rather than the actions of a cold and calculating organization committed to the type of death and mayhem unleashed on the thousands of innocent men, women, and children in the skies and on the ground of New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington DC on that clear Tuesday morning 5 years ago.

Sincerely,

CPT Smitson

University of Houston Pays "Tribute" with 'Fahrenheit 9/11'

Posted by: Ben Uhl

I am known as "the outspoken conservative" in the University of Houston College of Optometry, and on this 9/11 morning one of my "operatives" brought to my attention the headline of The Daily Cougar.  It read "SPB [Student Program Board] hosts blood drive to honor victims".

Some background: I stopped reading this rag a couple years ago when I constantly would read uninformed, sheltered students who were given space in the opinion section to spout idiocy to other uninformed, sheltered students.

You may ask, "Ben, what's wrong with holding a blood drive to honor the victims of 9/11?"  Well, here is the subtitle to the article: "Organization to collect blood for local hospitals and will show documentary 'Fahrenheit 9/11' as a tribute to the fallen".  Read it again.  That is absolutely unbelievable and they are completely serious.  I would expect to see this as a pseudo-headline in The Onion, but not in a large, state university newspaper.

This is wrong on many levels, however, the meat of the matter is that every University of Houston student contributed to this event, whether they agreed with it or not.  It is disappointing at best, and an embarrassment for sure.

I have linked the article below.  It is very short, and some of the quotations are pricelessly stupid.
